1st Annual Debra Turner Golf Tournament presented by The Mississippi Melons benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure
The Mississippi Melons are hosting the first annual Debra Turner Golf Tournament for the Breast Cancer 3‐day, benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure on Sunday, June 07 at North Creek Golf Club. The tournament will serve as our largest fund raiser this year. The Mississippi Melons have committed to walk 60 miles and raise $30,000 to help fight breast cancer.
We will accomplish this by participating in the Breast Cancer 3‐Day. The Breast Cancer 3‐day is a 60 mile walk which takes place in fourteen cities across the U.S. Last year we walked in Dallas, this year we are walking in San Francisco. Net proceeds from the Breast Cancer 3‐Day benefit breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs. We offer you the opportunity to become involved with a tournament that will soon become a community favorite. We hope that you will partner with the Mississippi Melons in supporting the work of the Breast Cancer 3‐day by providing a donation for our golf event. Please see the donation levels below and let us know which “cup size” fits you the best.

Why I choose to walk...
July 9, 2005… the phone call that changed everything. My mom, Jeanett Etheridge Bennett, called and asked me to come home for the weekend. My family and I were busy so I suggested we come the following weekend. Tearfully, she told me she needed me home. For the next fifteen minutes all I heard was…breast cancer…mastectomy…surgery… in 5 days! We rushed home to mom and dad with all my sisters and their families. She had a mastectomy the following Thurs., July 15.
“Make Yourself Happy” is one of my mom’s famous quotes. We all heard this growing up in almost every difficult situation. After her surgery, she barely took an aspirin for the pain. She then chose not to have radiation or chemo. Her infectious smile, kindness and giving spirit supported her healing and today she is healthy, confident and always positive!
My mom is the catalyst for my walk but there are so many more reasons as well. I walk for my friends like Karen Ehrett who just lost her sweet mom. I also think of others who have lost sisters, aunts, daughters and grandmothers. Some are celebrating, others suffering loss but all wanting a cure. These individuals need a VOICE! If I can help by simply walking, then let me stop now and grab my tennis shoes!
a Blessing for you...
First, please pray! Pray for the many fighting breast cancer and their families. Also, pray for me as I train physically and mentally to complete this challenge. Second, I value your financial donation. Every dollar will bring us all one step closer to a cure.
Your support is so valuable. Giving back will enable you to be an important part of this amazing blessing! Thank you for reading my story and being a part of my journey. God Bless ~ Shannon

About the Melons
- The Mississippi Melons
- The Mississippi Melons began in April 2008 as a team of 4. We walked out first Breast Cancer 3-Day in Dallas, Tx in November of 2008. The original 4 members collectively raised $9000, walked 60 miles and re-upped! Now 16 members strong and spread across Mississppi, Lousianna and Tennessee, The Melons are smarter, stronger and more determined than ever to fight this battled until the end! The Mississippi Melons are a team of dedicated and energetic women, working together and determined to make a difference in the battle to end breast cancer. Together, we will participate annually in a Breast Cancer 3-Day event benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure and work to make charitable contributions to organizations dedicated to breast cancer research, awareness, treatment and support. Our fundraising efforts and projects will be dedicated to these ends. "We commit ourselves to the fight to end breast cancer and secure a healthy future for our mothers, daughters and sisters, taking one step at a time. We walk because we can, for those that can’t."
